Double bassist Joanne DiMaria Bates attended the Curtis Institute of Music where she studied with Roger Scott. She was the winner of the Ford Foundation Fellowship, where she studied with Henry G. Scott, and the  Koussevitsky Foundation Fellow at Tanglewood, where she studied with Edwin Barker and Lawrence Wolfe. Bates has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra (first woman to play in their bass section), Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, opera companies in Philadelphia, Delaware and Trenton, and with the symphonies of Princeton, Delaware, Reading and the Riverside Symphonia. She has taught at Kutztown University, Chestnut Hill College and Mansfield University.
