Biography

James Wyman is principal timpanist of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO), a position he has held since September of 2013. Prior to his appointment with the BSO, Wyman held principal timpani positions with the Erie Philharmonic, the Reading Symphony and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic.

He has also performed with the Cleveland Orchestra, the National Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, the Indianapolis Symphony, the Virginia Symphony, the West Virginia Symphony, the Phoenix Symphony, the Brevard Music Festival Orchestra, the American Sinfonietta, and spent two summers as guest principal timpanist of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music.

Wyman is an active educator, teaching clinics and master classes throughout the Midwest. He is currently on faculty at Temple University and the Brevard Summer Music Festival. He has previously served on the faculty at the University of Maryland in College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He earned his BM at Baldwin Wallace University and his MM at Carnegie Mellon University. His teachers have included Josh Ryan, Paul Yancich, Timothy K. Adams, Paul Evans, and Christopher Allen.
