Danzando Para Los Oídos will be available for streaming and download on all major platforms March 6, 2026.

Danzando Para Los Oídos is a new exploration of Piazzolla’s six Tango Etudes for solo flute. Recorded on alto flute with improvised percussion, this album will challenge the way we have historically considered these gems of the flute repertoire. The rich sonorities of the alto flute lend themselves to the dark and sensuous affect that the Etudes invoke. I am joined on this album by jazz drummer Maria Marmarou, whose extensive experience in the jazz idiom made her the perfect choice to improvise a percussion part. Her creative and thoughtful approach to her instruments and how they pair with the Etudes is evident in the variety of sonic color she is able to produce. Each Etude has its own character, whether that’s a rumbling distant drum (Etude #2), a sassy cajon (Etude #3), or a mix of several instruments and timbres (Etude #5), Maria’s improvisations bring a fresh perspective to the Etudes.

The title track is a bonus track written by young composer and Philadelphia native Rhyuhn Green as a companion piece for the Tango Etudes. I met Rhyuhn through my work managing the Marian Anderson Young Artist Program and have been impressed with watching him grow as a composer and musician. I commissioned him to write a piece for solo alto flute that would pair nicely with the six Etudes, and his Danzando does not disappoint. The piece celebrates the drive and accented punctuation of Piazzolla's faster Tango Etudes, combined with Green’s signature rhythmic complexities and harmonic voice.

David Pasbrig’s incredible skill not just for recording, but for listening, adjusting, and coercing the sound from the raw recording to the finished product allowed Maria and I to take the musical risks necessary to bring the pieces to life.

Personnel

Equally at home experimenting in the cathedral loft and the jazz club, Anna Meyer is a flutist defined by a “bold sound” and a refusal to settle for the status quo. As a performer, she strives to dismantle the stereotypes surrounding flute playing, challenging her audiences to hear the instrument through a modern, often provocative lens. Whether she is performing alongside organist Erik Meyer in the AEMeyer duo—champions of living composers and creators of the acclaimed album Fantasmagoria—or reimagining Piazzolla’s Tango Etudes with jazz percussion on the alto flute, her work is defined by a refusal to settle for the predictable.

Anna’s influence extends from the stage to the studio, where she has built a reputation for solving "those pesky little problems" that plague flutists at every level. While serving as Artist-in-Residence at Temple University, her reputation for technical precision became so renowned that it sparked a waiting list of jazz saxophone doublers seeking her expertise.

As an author and educator, Anna is the creator of The Monster Flute Method Book and Duo Etudes for those Pesky Little Problems (Theodore Presser). As a mentor for the Marian Anderson Young Artist Program, her track record is peerless: 100% of her graduates have secured spots at elite institutions like Juilliard, Peabody, and Berklee. A versatile powerhouse on C flute, piccolo, and alto, Anna continues to redefine the boundaries of her craft from her home base in Philadelphia.

Anna holds degrees from the University of Cincinnati (CCM), Peabody Conservatory, and Temple University, having studied with notable teachers including Toshiko Kohno, Jack Wellbaum, Marina Piccinini, and David Cramer. She also performs frequently with the Reading Symphony.

Maria Marmarou is a graduate of Temple University, where she studied with Justin Faulkner and Steve Fidyk, earning her undergraduate and graduate degrees along with a professional studies certificate. Maria has shared the stage with notable artists such as Dick Oatts, Tim Warfield, Catherine Russell, Michael Dease, Orrin Evans, Greg Osby, Terell Stafford, Carmen Bradford and the Count Basie Orchestra, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, among others. Her performances have taken her to prestigious venues including Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Damrosch Park, Rose Hall and the Kimmel Center.

In 2023, Maria was honored with the Earl Hines Outstanding Musician Award at the Jack Rudin Collegiate Competition at JALC. In January 2024, she was selected to perform with the Sisters in Jazz Collegiate Jazz Combo at the 15th Annual JEN Conference in New Orleans, under the direction of Bria Skonberg. Maria is endorsed by Sabian Cymbals.
