On March 30, the Temple University Studio Orchestra, Jazz Band and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra performed in Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater.
Led by Maestro José Luis Domínguez, the GRAMMY®-nominated Studio Orchestra opened the concert with Duke Ellington's Night Creature (1955), a piece for jazz band and orchestra that was originally commissioned for a concert at Carnegie Hall. Next on the program was a medley of works by Frank Sinatra featuring soloists Terell Stafford on trumpet and Dick Oatts on saxophone. This Sinatra Medley (2015) was arranged by Michael Abene and recorded by the Studio Orchestra, Stafford and Oatts in 2017 for BCM&D Records.
The second half of the concert opened with individual sets by the award-winning Temple University Jazz Band (TUJB) followed by the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (VJO). As a special concert finale, TUJB and VJO closed out the night with a combined performance of the Thad Jones favorite, "Don't Git Sassy."
Dean Robert Stroker and Professor Terell Stafford also presented Professor Dick Oatts with the Boyer Inspiration Award for all his educational contributions to Boyer's Department of Jazz Studies. Oatts, who has served at Boyer for 19 years and been a member of the VJO since 1977, will retire from Temple at the conclusion of the 24-25 academic year.
