Teaching assistantships, academic internships, and research assistantships are open to full-time graduate students only. Based largely upon the quality of the student's undergraduate record and experience, these awards include full tuition remission, a cash stipend per year, and health insurance. Partial awards of ¼, ½, and ¾ of the full amount are also awarded. Recipients teach or render comparable service to the school.

Assistantships are available in Aural Theory, Choral Conducting, Computer Music Synthesis, Marching Band, Music Education, Music History, Music Therapy, Opera, Piano Accompanying, and Performance (Keyboard, Instrumental, and Voice).

Temple University offers a limited number of fellowships to support outstanding students in doctoral or terminal degree programs. Self-nomination is not permitted. Nominations for fellowships are submitted by the department/program only. Awards are open to full-time doctoral students only, or students currently in the master's program who have completed 18 credits and are expected to enter doctoral programs within the same department immediately after receiving the master's degree.

Fellowships typically provide support, including a stipend and tuition, for four years. (Shorter terms apply for those enrolled in a non-doctoral terminal degree program.) Often, the fellowship recipient is supported for the first two years with no service required or permitted. For the remaining period, fellowship recipients are required to perform up to 20 hours per week of service as a teaching assistant or research assistant.

• Presidential Fellowships are the most prestigious awards. Competition is reserved for only the most outstanding candidates.
• University Fellowships are awarded to outstanding incoming graduate students. These awards are intended to support students who demonstrate outstanding potential for success in their chosen fields.
• Future Faculty Fellowships are intended to attract outstanding students to Temple University and to diversify the professoriate. Candidates are newly admitted graduate students from underrepresented groups in the applicant's discipline who show exceptional leadership and/or have overcome significant obstacles in pursuing an academic career.

For full or partial tuition, awards are based upon the quality of the candidate's academic record and experience, and the availability of funds.
