The Bachelor of Music Education degree prepares students to teach, through an integrated sequence of academic coursework, music skills refinement and pre-service internship in urban and suburban educational settings. Successful completion of this degree program is one of the qualifications required to apply for teaching certification in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Certification allows the graduate to teach general music, vocal and instrumental in grades PreK-12.

The undergraduate program provides two options: f0ur year Traditional and five year Jazz – each with its own audition requirements and curricula. Students may choose to pursue a dual degree, such as music education and performance.

Coursework includes applied music, conducting, theory, history, keyboard, instrumental and vocal pedagogy, music education,  internships  and externships complete a comprehensive program that emphasizes musicianship, interpersonal skills and teaching proficiency. Two student teaching placements are required: one each in an elementary and secondary setting.

Students may choose one of four concentrations within the BM  Music Education degree:

  • Jazz Instrumental Concentration
  • Jazz Voice Concentration
  • Jazz Piano Concentration, Band/Orchestra Emphasis
  • Jazz Piano Concentration,  Choral/General Emphasis
