Conwell Dance Theater (5th & 6th floors, Conwell Hall) is a teaching and performance space dedicated to serving the needs of the Dance Department. Classes and rehearsals are held here regularly, and dance students can reserve the space for their own work. The theater also serves as a hands-on workshop for classes in Dance Production and Lighting Design for Dance.
Dance students have extensive opportunities to perform, as shows happen nearly every weekend during the Fall and Spring semesters. Programming includes terminal concerts by BFA and MFA students, as well as work by faculty and guest artists. All dance students are also invited to audition their choreography for the Student Dance Concert presented each semester.
A fully equipped 175 seat “black box” space, Conwell Dance Theater offers professional-quality production capabilities. The stage floor is 40’ wide by 30’ deep with black and white reversible marley flooring over a wood floor. There are four wings per side with ample backstage space. Upstage is a white scrim to be used as a cyc or projection surface and a black velour traveler curtain in front of it. The theater boasts an up-to-date lighting system with an ETC Ion console and a house light plot equipped with source-four instruments and LED cyc lights. There is a permanently installed Panasonic projector for video use. The audio system includes a digital mixer and some support for live music.
