Prior to joining Temple, Dr. Eyre was Associate Professor and Director of Music Therapy (2014-2018) at Immaculata University in Pennsylvania, and Assistant Professor at Immaculata (2008-2013). She was also an adjunct professor in music therapy at the University of Quebec in Montreal (2000-2005) and a teacher and examiner for the McGill Conservatory of Music in Montreal (1998-2003).
In 1995, she founded and developed a music therapy program in psychiatry at the Montreal General Hospital in the McGill University Heath System where she worked until 2006. She worked with numerous health care teams to offer music therapy to persons with chronic and acute mental illness in the inpatient, day hospital, and rehabilitation/recovery units of the hospital. During this time, with a psychology colleague, she co-founded Le groupe Musiart, a performing arts group and choir for persons with serious mental illness. This group received an award for the Most Innovative Event for Mental Health Awareness Week from the Canadian Psychiatric Association in 2000.
While at the McGill University Hospital Center, Eyre obtained start-up funding grants from the Music Therapy Trust Fund (Canada) to introduce music therapy programs in long-term care and in dialysis, both of which were granted continuance by the hospital. She has worked extensively in psychiatry and in community mental health, in medical settings, and with adults in private practice.
While a PhD candidate at Temple University, Eyre won the Doctoral Research Award for dissertation research completed under the guidance of Dr. Kenneth Bruscia. In 2010 she completed her training in the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music and became a Fellow of the Association for Music and Imagery. Her clinical work led her to seek innovative treatments for trauma, including attending a seminar on Complex Trauma with Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, certification in Energy Psychology (Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology), and trainings in Reiki, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) with Linda Curran and Attachment focused EMDR with Laurel Parnell. Her research interests include applications of narrative therapy practices in music therapy, recovery in mental health, and clinical music improvisation. She serves on the editorial review board of Music Therapy Perspectives and the Canadian Journal of Music Therapy. Among her many article and chapter publications is her edited book, Guidelines to Music Therapy Practice in Mental Health, published in 2013 by Barcelona Publishers.
